The Owl House – A Must-See in Nieu-Bethesda
Step into the magical world of The Owl House, the life’s work of South African artist Helen Martins. Located in the quiet village of Nieu-Bethesda, this remarkable home-turned-museum is one of the country’s most celebrated examples of outsider art.
Helen began transforming her home in the 1940s using crushed glass, mirrors, wire, and cement, turning ordinary walls and garden paths into dazzling works of art. The result is a dreamlike space filled with light, colour, and over 300 sculptures—owls, camels, mermaids, people, and mythical creatures—all gazing eastward, inspired by her fascination with spirituality and the writings of Omar Khayyam and William Blake.
